The complementary roles of perceptual and conceptual knowledge can be extrapolated to evolutionary processes on a grander scale. The physiological adaptation of an organism to its environment informs its behavior in terms of perceptual knowing. As Huron states, the stable features of an environment are instrumental in the formation of innate behavior over generations (2006: 61). On the other hand, behaviors that pertain to the rapidly changing aspects of an environment need to be learned. Although instinctual knowledge may appear to contrast the idea of prestructured perceptual knowledge, it should be noted that Gibson’s model does not deny the role of the nervous system in registering the differences between invariants (1966: 284).

We engage with events in multiple stages of cognition. We gather structured information about events through their invariant features; the perception of these features helps us develop mental representations that aid cognitive processes on later encounters with similar events. Perceptual knowing can be associated with the evolutionary traits of the auditory system that deal with the low-level attributes of sound. For instance, the reverberant properties of an acoustic environment affords us a sense of spatial extent. The loudness and pitch of an environmental sound provide structured information about the nature of the associated event in terms of its spatial extent, proximity, and dynamic unfolding. In the following chapter, we will revisit the concept of affordances as they emerge virtually in the context of a musical narrative. Then, we will explore how such affordances relate to our sense of affect, which we discussed in

Chapter 2.
